Before Your First Color Consultation: What to Bring & Ask
By Forward Hair Lab LLC | October 22, 2026
If you found me while searching hair styling near me or a salon near me in Collierville, this guide is here to make your first consultation feel simple and clear.
One of my favorite things clients say about Forward Hair Lab is that it’s a cozy little shop with just 2 stations, and it feels quiet and relaxed. If you’re nervous about your first color consultation, that’s normal. Most people aren’t worried about the color itself, they’re worried about miscommunication, surprise pricing, or leaving with something that doesn’t feel like them.
A color consultation is a short planning session, about 15 minutes with me, where I assess your hair’s density and texture, talk through your inspiration, and map out a realistic color plan that protects your hair’s integrity. This post covers what to bring, what to ask, and how to leave with a plan you actually feel good about, especially if you’re coming to see me off the New Byhalia Road corridor in north Collierville near I-269.
Quick note on timing: Not every consult includes immediate coloring. When you book, I’ll confirm whether we’re planning only or planning plus color service the same day.
Your pre-consult checklist (so I can plan your color fast)
The best consultations are the ones where you don’t have to “remember it all” on the spot. I do a lot of listening here. Clients tell me they came to me after feeling like their previous stylist wasn’t listening, and that difference starts in the consult.
Bring these 4 things
- Inspiration photos you actually like. Save 2 to 5 pictures, and try to include one in natural light. If you can, grab a front and back view. I’m looking for tone, brightness, and placement.
- Your hair history. Tell me what you’ve done in the last 2 to 3 years: box dye, professional color, highlights, bleach, relaxers, keratin, perms. If you don’t know exact dates, a rough timeline is fine.
- What you use at home. If you’re not sure, snap a quick photo of your shampoo, conditioner, masks, and any purple or clarifying products. I often recommend quality products for at-home use and I’ll tell you how to use them correctly so you’re not wasting money.
- Your maintenance comfort level. Be honest about how often you want to come in. I’ll plan your color around that, not around an unrealistic “perfect” schedule.
And yes, you can absolutely discuss your hair goals during the consultation. That’s the whole point. If you’re commuting in from Germantown, Arlington, Piperton, Eads, or Memphis, I want the plan to fit your life. A good consult saves you time and money because we avoid surprises and we book the right amount of time for your next appointment.
If you want a deeper read before you come in, I broke down planning in this guide to consultations in the New Byhalia Road corridor.
What happens in a 15-minute Color Consultation at Forward Hair Lab
When you arrive, you’ll notice pretty quickly that our space doesn’t feel chaotic. Clients mention it’s quiet, relaxing, and welcoming, and that matters if you’ve had busy, rushed salon experiences before.
Step 1: I look at your hair in real life, not just your photos
I’m assessing density and texture, plus what your hair has been through. If you’ve got previously bleached areas, fragile ends, or uneven tone, I’ll point it out gently and explain what it means for your end goal.
Step 2: You tell me the goal, and I translate it into a plan
This is where that “listening” piece really shows up. Clients regularly tell me they finally felt heard here. If you’re bringing a big change, like going blonde after years of thinking about it, I’ll be straight with you about what it takes. Sometimes it’s one appointment. Sometimes it’s multi-session. Either way, I’ll tell you what I’m thinking and why.
Step 3: I set expectations for timing, integrity, and comfort
If we’re planning a major correction or lightening service, I’ll talk through how long it can take and what the day feels like. One client described a big blonde change that took multiple days and appreciated getting a heads up at each step. That “talking you through it” starts in the consult. My priority is protecting your hair’s integrity, not forcing a result your hair isn’t ready for.
“The salon itself is quiet, relaxing, and never chaotic like so many others, it’s truly a place where you can unwind while getting pampered.”

If you want extra clarity on how planning works, this post on how long a color consultation lasts explains why some consults stay quick and others need a little more conversation.
The questions I want you to ask (so pricing and upkeep don’t surprise you)
If you’ve ever left a salon feeling unsure what you just agreed to, this section is for you. A consultation is where we get clean on the details: how we’re getting there, what it costs, and what it takes to keep it looking good.
- “What’s realistic for my hair in one session?” If your goal is a big shift, I’ll map out the timeline so you’re not blindsided.
- “How often will I need maintenance?” Lived-in color, balayage, vivid color, and blonde all have different rhythms. I’ll help you choose what fits.
- “What’s the estimated cost for the plan?” My Color Consultation starts at $35. During the consult, I’ll give you a clear estimate for the services we’re planning, and I’ll explain what affects pricing (time, product, and complexity).
- “Do I need a patch test?” If you’ve had reactions in the past or you’re worried, let me know. We’ll talk through options and timing.
- “What do I need to do at home to keep this looking good?” This is where product choice matters. In Collierville’s humid-subtropical climate, summer humidity can push brassiness faster, and indoor heat in fall and winter can dry out color-treated hair. I’ll tell you what to focus on, usually moisture plus the right cleansing routine.
If you’re comparing options and trying to talk yourself out of DIY, I get it. I wrote color consultation vs DIY color because most “salon fixes” start with a box that didn’t match the picture.
After the consult: how I help you protect your color between visits
A color consultation is planning, but it still has an “after.” You’ll leave with a plan you can explain in plain English and a clear idea of what you’ll do next. If I think your hair needs some support before a major color service, I’ll tell you. Sometimes the win is getting your hair healthy first so the color looks better and lasts longer.
My general rule: Moisture and gentle cleansing keep color looking expensive. If you overwash, over-clarify, or skip conditioner, color fades faster and your ends feel rough.
I’ll also talk to you about rebooking. Some color goals need a follow-up appointment on purpose, not because something went wrong. When we set that expectation up front, you can plan around work, family schedules, and those I-269 errands along the New Byhalia Road corridor without stress.
“My formerly bleached hair is now healthy and wonderful again!”

The inside tip that makes first visits easier in our 2-station salon
Here’s something I think people deserve to know up front: because Forward Hair Lab is intentionally small, the vibe stays calm. Two stations. Clients tell me it’s one of the reasons they can actually relax, and why they keep coming back for years.
I’ve also noticed a pattern with new guests. They come in wanting a change, but what they’re really craving is consistency. They want a plan, a stylist who listens, and results that make people ask, “Where do you go & who does it?” That’s exactly what a color consultation is for.
If you’re ready for your consult: Book a Color Consultation (15 minutes, starting at $35) so I can see your hair in person and map out the right next step.
You’ll find us in Collierville, convenient to the New Byhalia Road corridor. If you’re searching for a hairdresser salon that feels calm and still takes color seriously, I’d love to meet you.
